‘Gargoyles and Gangrene’

This project contributed to a community wide project called ‘The Wormhole’ which has been designed to show the people of Thornhill that the area in which they live has a significant amount of history attached to it, forming part of a medieval pilgrimage route.

The group was involved in a number of different activities which explored aspects of medieval life. The young people looked at the lives of medieval monks, which included a trip to the local Abbey in Llantarnam, where Sister Gabrielle talked to the group about its history and showed them two gravestones believed to have belonged to monks who had lived there.

The young people also took part in creative writing workshops which involved producing limericks in response to local ghost stories, and were inspired by a trip to Cosmeston Medieval Village where the young people were encouraged to imagine the kinds of things that happened in each of the different buildings.

All of these research aspects and creative elements were gathered together to produce the final booklet.
