This project aimed to address the postcard representation of Blaenavon and the surrounding area. The young people felt that the postcards for sale in the area did not depict the ‘real’ Blaenavon and painted a rather dull and old fashioned image of the place.
They decided to design their own postcards using imagery which would change people’s traditional perceptions of Blaenavon and present the landscape and community from the outlook of a young person.
The group researched the existing postcards of the area and other tourist literature, and studied a range of designs and sizes for their postcards. The group visited National Museum Cardiff and gained advice and information about the production and selling of postcards from the site’s commercial manager. Keeping all of this information in mind, the young people journeyed through Blaenavon and the surrounding area taking photographs of places and things which represented what was important and appealing to them. The best images were selected and were manipulated by the young people to produce their finished designs.
