A group of young people from Penglais Secondary School in Aberystwyth designed and created a magnificent mosaic that interprets the history of Aberystwyth harbour. The idea originated from the ‘Rivers to the Sea, Harbour to the World Project’, which aims to raise awareness of the maritime history of Aberystwyth. The group chose four ships that sailed from Aberystwyth harbour in its heyday during the nineteenth century; the Volunteer, a brigantine, typical of the kind that carried local cargoes; the Edith Eleanor, the last wooden ship to be built in Aberystwyth; the Countess of Lisbourne, the last steam ship to use the harbour; and the lifeboat, Elizabeth Lloyd. As research, the group visited Ceredigion Museum’s ‘Lifeboats of Aberystwyth’. The completed mosaic is visible at Aberystwyth harbour.
