The MAST Sculpture Summer School gave young people the opportunity to explore the locality around Swansea Museum and respond to its wonderfully eclectic collection. Industrial and maritime themes were examined and museum practice itself was questioned.
The young people rose to the challenge and supported by professional artists they created works of considerable sophistication and beauty as well as some that were more light-hearted and humorous. They worked together with dedication and commitment and their confidence and ambition grew steadily.
They worked outside in part of the docklands area that is due for redevelopment and collected found materials and objects that spoke poignantly of Swansea’s past as a sea port. These were used on site to create large pieces of site-specific work.
Some of the materials were carried back to the Museum and displayed in cases or arranged as installations with added significance and meaning.
The whole experience was videoed by the young people and edited into short films that manage to capture the essence of the project.
