'Hirwaun – Past and Present'

Hirwaun YMCA

This project was split into two parts.

Part 1 at Cardiff Rugby Club producing paintings of the club’s current players.

"It was a great experience going to the Cardiff Blues stadium and meeting some of the players and watching the Welsh rugby players train" - Daniel
"We went down the Cardiff Blues rugby stadium and painted some of the players and we watched the Welsh squad train. We also had a buffet in the players lounge" - Aaron

Part 2 at Hirwaun YMCA, creating artwork for the wall of Hirwaun Library.

We wanted to create artwork which would reflect our village’s history and what it is like to live here today. We walked around Hirwaun with our cameras and took photographs of landmarks like Tower Colliery, the local police station and the flats, that we thought would give an accurate picture of our village, past and present.

"It was good painting some of the landmarks. The best we painted was Ramoth, the chapel in Hirwaun" - Daniel
"We spent two days in the YMCA and we took photos of Tower Colliery, the flats, Ramoth and the bridge by the reservoir at the heads of the valley. We all had a great time working with Jon and Sally" - Aaron
"We were very impressed by the high standard of artwork that the young people produced" - Gail Reed, Hirwaun YMCA
