Evaluation of the On Common Ground Scheme

OCG2 ran in five counties: Rhondda Cynon Taff, Torfaen, Caerphilly, Swansea and Ceredigion. It was managed by a dedicated team of three people under the Directorate of Learning and Programmes based at the National Museum Cardiff. It was supported by an Internal Monitoring Group which reviewed performance, and also by a broader Steering Group with independent members which reviewed wider strategy and how the scheme might develop in future.

OCG is seen as a constantly evolving scheme through which Amgueddfa Cymru ~ National Museum Wales can learn how to encourage greater use of, and involvement in, the institution’s resources. The ways in which it may evolve in future and the way the lessons learned be ‘mainstreamed’ throughout Amgueddfa Cymru ~ National Museum Wales, have been a regular theme of discussions, and our evaluation report contributes to this thinking.

A variety of methods were used to gather information and knowledge from different sources, including the young people participating in the scheme through peer-led evaluation techniques. Evaluation processes were designed to enable as much direct feedback as possible to flow from participants and partners back to the Amgueddfa Cymru ~ National Museum Wales.

OCG2 was designed around eight objectives, which required a fairly complex structure. Many objectives were complementary and mutually reinforcing, and the beneficiaries included young people, local communities, youth work organisations, community artists, museums and heritage sites. Four sources of expertise were harnessed – locally based youth services, professional community artists, museums, galleries and heritage sites, and the Open College Network.
