It emerged from a local youth conference held in 2003 that young people living in the Eastside of Swansea held a strong sense of community. This was partly due to them having listened to tales of ‘days gone by’ and in particular of old community carnivals.
In 2005 a Carnival Committee was formed in order to revive the community carnival – the first in over 30 years. A group of local young people wanted to experience and capture all aspects of the carnival on film for posterity. These young people researched archival material on Welsh carnivals from the early 1900s to the mid 1970s and interviewed older community members in order to get a better understanding of carnivals and to develop their project further. The group attended film training workshops, delivered by Arts for Us, and produced a DVD to be enjoyed by all community members now and in the future.
