Blaenllechau Community Regeneration

A group of young people from Blaenllechau, Rhondda Cynon Taff, worked with local artist Dylan Thompson to create a large sculpture of their interpretation of a Welsh dragon – a new design, quite different to the typical Welsh dragon.

From sketches and drawings, the group made a skeleton from wire. The skeleton was then coated with air hardening clay to make the dragon’s body. The arms, legs, head and wings were made separately and attached afterwards. The wing membranes were made from material coated with glue to harden them. Once the main skin was dry it was carved and textured with tools to make details such as scales. The finished dragon was painted red and varnished for protection.

“The idea behind this project was to take an idea and produce something exciting and impressive. Our Welsh Dragon will capture people’s imagination, but it is still typically Welsh.”

Hywel Mills, project participant.
